Barbara (Lyras) Dubos
I rarely
plan a painting and what I like about my work is how I have become comfortable
with imperfection, and no matter, if during the painting process I am
uncomfortable with the development of a painting, a finished product suddenly
emerges.
I prefer
to paint “plein air.” I am fascinated with how rapidly the colors and the
scenes of nature change during the time I am outside. When I paint outside
the colors of the sky, tress, and landscape change continuously as the
lighting changes around whatever scene I am painting. Free, imperfect,
mysterious, hidden, searching, and never really finding the answer is my
aspiration for each painting. When I look at my paintings and I become “lost”
in the painting I consider the work finished. As a child I remember my mother
and I would sit for hours and stare at the clouds as they would drift above
us. I was always amazed how, in a matter of minutes, the same cloud would
take on many shapes, and I would watch it until it faded away. It is when I
connect with those past feelings of being free I produce my best work. My
goal is to give the observer the glimpse of many possible scenes and never
tire of imagining what is hidden within my art or where it leads.
My
favorite painting tool is the palette knife. I like the knife because I can
cut, scrape, mix and shape the paint on the canvas. The medium I use is
acrylic because it dries quickly and allows me to weave texture into each
piece until the final result is produced. I like to build the texture of the
paint and glide layers upon layers of different colors until each painting
takes on a life of its own. My favorite colors are different shades of green,
gold, blue, and orange because of their relation to nature and the comfort I
feel when working with them. When people see my work, I’d like them to relax
and imagine themselves somewhere far away from the stress of everyday life.
